How do solar feed in tariffs work?
If you use solar panels to power your home, the chances are you’ve heard about solar feed in tariffs. Many homeowners don't realise that their solar panels are generating more power than they can use. This means energy is often needlessly wasted. In fact, you could be losing up to 50% of the energy your panels generate!
If your panels were producing more solar power than you could use, a solar feed in tariff was the perfect solution. However, sadly this scheme is now closed to new applicants.
A feed in tariff is an agreement between you and your electricity provider. The extra solar power your panels create is sold back to the power company and you receive regular payments.
Why are feed in tariff rates important?
The rate of your feed in tariff dictates how much you make for selling power to your energy company. The feed in tariff rates offered by your energy provider are set by the government to ensure you get a fair price for your electricity.
Can you still get a feed in tariff for solar panels?
In order to qualify for a feed in tariff, you needed to apply for the scheme by March 2019. However, a new scheme is being introduced, called the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Feed in tariff rates are decided by power companies. But you can still receive regular payments based on how much excess electricity you produce.
Who has the best solar feed in tariff?
As no new applicants are being accepted onto the solar feed in tariff scheme, finding the best solar feed in tariff is no longer possible. However, more companies are now offering the Smart Export Guarantee scheme, perfect for anyone who missed the 2019 deadline.
All large energy companies (with over 150,000 customers) are required to offer 1 or more export only SEG tariffs. This means that currently you can sign up to the SEG scheme with any energy company, not just your energy supplier. So it’s worth shopping around for the best deal.
