Using a wind turbine to power your home is a great, sustainable choice for anyone looking to reduce their carbon footprint. However, if your wind turbine generates more power than you can use, it may be possible to sell this electricity back to your energy company.

Unfortunately the wind turbine feed in tariff is now closed to any new applicants. The purpose of the feed in tariff was that it allowed any wind turbine owners who were producing excess electricity to make a profit. This agreement laid out the rate at which you would be paid for any power you sold to your energy company. You’d then receive regular payments for up to 25 years.

The rate of your feed in tariff controls the income you make on your extra wind power. This amount was set by the government to ensure you received a fair price for your energy.

Does the feed in tariff still exist?

In order to qualify for the feed in tariff, you needed to apply for the scheme by March 2019. If you missed the application deadline, don't worry as a new scheme is being introduced.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme works similarly to the feed in tariff scheme. You’ll receive a regular income based on the amount of extra power you generate after it’s sold to your energy company.

A key difference is that the amount you earn is now set by your power company, not the government.

Surprisingly, no. Large power companies who have over 150,000 customers have to offer at least 1 export only Smart Export Guarantee tariff. This means that you can sell your excess wind energy to any company, not just your usual power company.

If you’re planning to sell extra wind energy to a power company, you need to ensure your electrical needs are met first.

For example, if you need 3kW of energy and you produce 6kW of energy you have 3kW spare to sell.

Domestic turbines can produce between 1kW and 15kW so depending on the size of your home, this should be sufficient.

Although the feed in tariff scheme is no longer accepting new applicants, you can still get paid for producing extra energy. If you have a large amount of land, wind turbine companies may offer you regular payments to install a turbine on your property.

You can make a good income this way, although many homeowners would rather not have a commercial wind turbine near their home. As a rough guide, you could earn around £40,000 a year to have a 3MW wind turbine installed on your property.
