One of the best things about choosing an electric gate is the variety available. There are many different types of electric gate but the most popular options include:

• Sliding gates

• Cantilever sliding gates

• Telescopic sliding gates

• Swing gates

• Bi fold swing gates

Your electrician will use a cable running from your home to your gate. This cable will generally be buried in a trench. It’s important that this trench is inside an armoured conduit.

So, what cable is used for electric gates? Well, this will depend on the distance the cable needs to travel. Thicker cables are used for longer distances. As an example, a cable that travels 20 metres will need a 3 core 2.5mm core cable. A longer cable of around 50 metres will need to be a 4mm core cable.

Electric gates run off electricity. When installing a new electric gate, you’ll usually need a 230V supply running from a mains consumer unit that can be fitted next to your gate.

Another option is to use a 24Vdc supply which is usually safer than a 230V supply. This is commonly fitted using a transformer that converts your mains power supply.

The amount you pay for a new electric gate to be installed will vary depending on a few key factors. These include:

• Size of gate - The size of your gate will impact how much it costs. For example, a large gate will be more expensive than a small gate.

• Type of gate - Whether your gate is a sliding or swinging gate will affect the amount you pay. Sliding gates are usually more expensive than swinging gates.

• Materials used - Electric gates are available in a range of materials, each with a different price. As a rough guide, PVC gates are great if you’re on a budget, while wrought iron gates are a luxury investment.

• Extra features - Adding an intercom or camera to your gates will increase the amount you pay.
