2 Calculate RSJ and steel beam.
Posted 15 February
We hired Paul Shoda from Stap Structural Engineering to provide accurate calculations for a steel beam and RSJ, expecting professionalism. Instead, he included calculations on the plans but later claimed they were for his use only—so why put them there? Worse, his measurements were wrong, forcing us to pay extra to fix his mistakes. This has been an expensive and frustrating experience. A structural engineer should provide accuracy and reliability, but we got neither. I would not recommend this service.Verified reviewerJob location: IP272 Structural survey of a potential house purchase.

Terrible service. If you want someone who is professional, writes their own reports is accurate and timely do not use this company. I requested a structural survey on a property. When the report arrived 2 weeks later, it contained numerous inconsistencies, inaccuracies and contradictions. The wrong address. Stating 'clear evidence of subsidence' in one section and 'no structural movement' in another. The 4 for courtesy is for his PA. Paul said he doesn't write his own reports - it was clearly a copy and paste job. 15% discount accepted. Revised report correct but still not on time.Verified reviewerJob location: OX268 Inspection for regularisation

I was buying an older property that didn’t have building regulations sign off for work done 20 years ago. I spoke to Paul who replied promptly. He carried out a detailed survey of an RSJ and submitted the report and calculations I needed to apply for regularisation (retrospective application). The work was urgent so I could exchange on the property with confidence the work had been done to standard. I used his reports to make the application which is currently under consideration. My only suggestion would be better communication on how long the report would take to come through.Verified reviewerJob location: OX109.33 Chimney breast safety

Paul was very prompt and the communication with his office was very clear. He was very nice. The drawings he gave me were for my builders to execute and once we had cleared up a miscommunication all was resolved quickly.Verified reviewerJob location: CT108 Assessing the structural stability of the roof and loft space.

The company was quick to respond and lay out both pricing and details. The pricing was fair and the information was clear and concise.Verified reviewerJob location: CB98.75 Steel calculations at short notice

We needed some steel calcs and a bridging design at short notice to bridge a sewer pipe that we were building over. Design and calcs received really quickly and very professional pack included via email. Expensive, but responsive.Verified reviewerJob location: PO12

Our mission is to provide clients across the United Kingdom with structural engineering services for all types of buildings, from concept planning through completion, with a highly skilled professional team working together, using common sense and practical experience.
Temporary works are the parts of a construction project that are needed to enable the permanent works to be built. Usually the temporary works are removed after use - e.g. Facade Retention, Temporary Supports & Restraints, Demolition, Protection, Access Scaffold & Gantry Structures, Sheet Piling & Retaining Structure Design, Underpinning Design, Piling Platform / Mat Design, Needle Shoring & Propping Design, Tower Crane Bases/ Foundation & Hoist, Mobile Crane Outrigger Load Check, Temporary Support for Basement design, Falsework & Formwork Design, Hoarding & Site Entrance Gate Design, Mortar Silo Base Design, Site Cabin Base Design, Category 2 & 3 Checks, Practical Floor Load Test – (for machine loading), Acting as Temporary Works Co-ordinator etc.
Permanent works are the parts of a construction project that will be used and remain in position for a long time - e.g. 60 years - e.g. Foundation Design – Strip Pads, Piles & Ground Beams etc., Domestic & Commercial Premises Conversions, Steel Frame, Beam, Columns & Connection, Fabrication & Detailing, Timber Frame Design, Retaining Wall, Concrete Elements Design, Concrete Reinforcement Detailing etc.
As the Temporary Works Engineer, we coordinate design, selection of equipment, appointment of contractors, supervision of work, checking completion, authorisation to load and removal; thoroughly and systematically. Temporary works can be very sensitive to how they are used and are easily affected by other work taking place nearby. For these reasons the TW designer needs TW training and experience.
