A previous "company" had installed land drains just 2" (50mm) below the surface !!! We installed land drains of our own design, 2-3' (600 - 900mm) below the surface; just above the water level at the outlet.. Upon excavating the various trenches, we discovered that the previous "company" had turfed directly onto the solid clay beneath, instead of removing the clay and putting down a minimum of 6" of top soil... We also discovered that a lot of the turf had been laid straight onto 10mm pea shingle, almost 600mm deep; with the previous "company's" land drains on top of this shingle.. In places the turf was under 2" thick !!! Once complete we rotavated the top layer and laid new top soil, ready for new turf installation.
