A previous "company" had installed land drains 2" below the surface !!! We installed land drains of our own design, just above the water level at the outlet.. Upon excavating the five trenches, we discovered that the previous "company" had turfed directly onto the solid clay beneath, instead of removing the clay and putting down a minimum of 6" of top soil... We also discovered that more than half of the turf had been laid straight onto 10mm pea shingle, almost 600mm deep; with the previous "company's" land drains on top of this shingle.. In places the turf was under 2" thick !!!
