    Upgrading Aico fire alarm system

    Posted 24 February

My house already had an Aico fire alarm system (installed by the previous owner), but it was clearly inadequate. For example, there was no alarm anywhere near our boiler ... which is in a bedroom. Smartech Elec were extremely thorough in drawing up a plan for upgrading the system with the latest Aico 3000 series. My house is now much better protected, and the new system will also notify me on my phone if I'm away from home. There are a lot of rules and regulations around fire alarms, so you need an installer who knows what they're doing. Smartech Elec are excellent.

    3-phase consumer unit installation

    Posted 24 February

Smartech Elec have done an amazing job installing 3-phase equipment in my house. The work was done last year and everything is operating perfectly. 500 characters isn't nearly enough to explain the whole project, but I now have a very powerful electric cooker with induction hob and lots of spare capacity for future projects (such as a heat pump). Smartect Elec have experience doing both domestic and commercial work, so they are able and willing to tackle much more complex projects than your average electrician. They are very thorough and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this company.

    Cleaning gutter

    Posted 05 October 2024

My gutter is 3 stories up, so I needed a professional company to use a cherry picker to get up there and clean it out. They took before/after pictures so I could see what they did and it looks really clean now.

    Roof inspection

    Posted 03 October 2024

My roof is leaking so I paid £400 for a drone inspection. They spent less than 5 minutes flying the drone and sent a 234 word diagnosis that was obviously wrong: they said that the flashing has been stuck on incorrectly with a silicone or adhesive base, but I know for certain that that's not true and that it has already been cemented into the wall. Their follow-up suggestion was to coat the back of slate with spray foam, which sounds like a horrible bodge to me.

    Installing Grohe shower

    Posted 24 September 2024

I bought a Grohe shower, but then discovered that it would be difficult to install because it required different water connections than my old shower. The situation wasn't looking good. I thought I would either have to buy a different shower or remove some tiles to modify the fittings behind the tile. But John found a much better solution. He cut a hole in the tile that was just big enough to modify the fittings, but small enough that it would be fully concealed by the new shower. It's all installed and working now, and looks great!

    Skim plastering in living room

    Posted 05 February 2024

I needed to get a section of wall replastered after my electricians cut a channel to add new sockets. I had already filled the hole with polyfilla but it wasn't smooth enough to paint. A Kelly covered the whole area with a thin layer of plaster and it is now perfectly smooth. I'm very happy with the result. He was also very careful not to make a mess in the living room, by putting down sheets and protecting the carpet with plastic.

Repointing brick on 19th century house

    Posted 28 November 2023

Our house was built in the 1840s so the repointing needed to be done with period-appropriate materials (lime mortar). Gaz is very knowledgeable about these traditional construction methods and materials and has done a very nice job on the repointing.

    Replace old aerial

    Posted 28 November 2023

Our old aerial needed to be replaced. TVS did a great job replacing the bracket, running a new cable, and installing a new aerial. They were very thorough, using a measuring device both on the roof and inside the house to check that the new aerial is giving a clean signal.

Upgrading electrics after moving into new house

    Posted 16 November 2023

I recently moved into a new house. Some of the electrics looked a bit dodgy, so I wanted to get it checked. Smartech Elec did a safety check (EICR) and replaced my old plastic consumer units with modern metal ones. I wish I could attach a photo because my electrical cabinet looks so much better now. It was a tangled mess of wires before, but now it's really neat. They also investigated several ethernet sockets that weren't working and fixed them. Smartech Elec are incredibly knowledgeable, not just about traditional electrics but also about computer networking. They did really great work.
